Don's 1st Day SR

Our History

On January 1, 1972, Bob Segal, Harold Roitman, and Dick Coleman formed a partnership named Segal, Roitman & Coleman. The purpose of the partnership was to provide legal services to labor union clients, Taft-Hartley benefit funds, and individual employees.

The firm had one associate at the time, a young lawyer named Don Siegel (pictured above), who later became a partner and remained with the firm until his retirement in 2022. The firm’s offices were originally located at 11 Beacon Street in Boston, where you will find the letters LB on the corner of the building signifying the “Lawyers’ Building.” The Firm remained at 11 Beacon Street for its first 36 years, before moving to Devonshire Street, and then to our current offices, located in an historic garment factory in Chinatown owned by the Ladies Garment Workers Center.

Segal Roitman is proud to celebrate over 50 years dedicated to its mission and many significant accomplishments along the way. In 1993, we celebrated a 9-0 U.S. Supreme Court decision in favor of our client the Greater Boston Building and Construction Trades. The decision upheld the right of the Commonwealth and our client to enter into a Project Labor Agreement for the Boston Harbor cleanup project known as the Deer Island Project. Two of the firm’s partners have served as distinguished judges in the Commonwealth. In 2011, Mary Sullivan was appointed by Governor Deval Patrick to the Massachusetts Appeals Court, where she served until her retirement in 2023. In 2013, Indira Talwani was nominated by President Barack Obama to the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, where she serves as federal trial judge today. Many Segal Roitman attorneys have served or continue to serve as law school professors, teaching labor law and related subjects to the next generation of labor and employment lawyers, while others have taught generations of union leaders the nuts and bolts of industrial relations through organizations such as the Boston Labor Guild.

Throughout its history, Segal Roitman has remained dedicated to working for working people. We look forward to continuing that mission for many years to come.
